History of the Corsage

Although we love wearing flowers because of their beauty and fragrance, ancient cultures had much more practical reasons for adorning themselves with florals. They believed that flowers and herbs warded off evil spirits and illnesses, and flowers were worn as good omens for wedding ceremonies and other momentous events. By the 16th century, wearing flowers was nearly an everyday occurrence, and even men wore a single flower in their lapel (known as a boutonniere) on a regular basis. However, as beliefs began to change, and medical knowledge advanced, flowers became a luxury item. By the end of the 17th century, corsages were primarily offered to young ladies from the men they were courting and were the acceptable gift when going out to a special occasion.

Corsages are still a traditional gift when heading to spring dances, or to prom. They are also popular to give to Mom on Mother’s Day, or to a graduating senior on her big day.
